Financing for Solar Home lights
Aryavart Gramin bank has been awarded the prestigious "Ashden Award" last year and the undersigned had the privilege of receiving the Ashden Trophy in the meeting of Chairmen of RRB's held in Delhi on 27.08.2008, being the recognition of our bank's above achievement. We would like to apprise that after winning the "Ashden Award", our commitment towards the above goal of providing lights in the lives of our rural clientele has become stronger and focused.
Progress and development opportunities are inhibited due to inadequate lighting in rural areas. In fact, for rural people life comes to stand still after dusk. They are forced to use kerosene lamps, dung cakes, firewood and crop residue after sun set to feebly light their homes. This has an adverse impact on health, environment and safety of teeming millions in the longer span. Therefore, we in Aryavart Gramin Bank have taken up the project of financing for solar lights with the seriousness it deserves.
At the time of receiving the 'Ashden Award* the Bank had financed as much as 881 1 SHLS as on June -08. As on 31.03.2009, the number has risen to more than 28000 solar home lights, thereby bringing immense comfort and happiness in the lives of approx. 140000 villagers (assuming a family size of 5). This financing is spread in a large number of villages in six districts of our area of operation. Some of features of this financing programme are
(i) Our Harpalpur Branch (Hardoi Distt.) has financed 530 Solar Home Lights in the villages in its operational area. Two of the villages in its command area are 100% Solar Lighted. (ii) Our Gondwa Branch (Hardoi Distt.) has financed approx. 400 Solar Home Lights in village Gondwa.(iii) Our Mahadewa & Mohd.pur Khala(Barabanki Distt.) branches has also saturated 3 villages by financing the adequate number of Solar Home Lighting Systems.
This provides a pleasurable experience of a well lit village during night and the villagers conducting many business activities, some of which are numerated below: - (a) The ladies in the village can now do the "jardozi" (embroidery work) for 4-5 hours after evening and have more earning from this job work which was hitherto not possible as there was no grid power in the village,(b) Medical shop, sweets shop etc can now do better business upto 10 P.M. or so.(c) It gives immense pleasure to see children studying after 7.00 p.m. or so which was unseen for generations in the villages.(iv) In Borobanki, Farrukhabad, Unnao A Kannauj Districts also there is high demand for solar home lights.(v) To cater to the growing requirement of after sale service (as the number exceeds 28000), 10 service centres have been established by Aryavart Gramin Bank, which will be further strengthened by using the money, received as part of Ashden Award. The rural youth is being trained and provided kit by the Bank, which will create an employment in their own village/habitat.(vi) Bank has signed an agreement with a US Company on trading carbon credit which shall result in an income of approx. Rs 30 lakhs per annum at present scale of operations alone and for next five years. This income we propose to strengthen the after sale services, extension and training. Most probably, Aryavart Gramin Bank must be the first bank in the country to have received carbon credits in due course (and one of few banks world over if not the only bank). Many top level bureaucrats and trainee groups (having trainees from all parts of the country) for Bankers Institute of Rural Development, Lucknow and found it superb, particularly seeing the village women able to work beyond dusk and work at home and in kitchens without inhaling the harmful kerosene smoke. Children can now study and more number of productive hours far business trade and study etc. are available. Performance of the Bank has been lauded by Government of India, State Government, NABARD and many other institutions / organizations. Our Bank has been included in the group set up by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, New Delhi, to finalise the modalities, to take initiative for financing Solar Light Systems through Bank.To promote the idea of the SHS, the Aryavart Gramin Bank branches hold 'Credit Camps' in villages. At a credit camp at Barabanki on 2&th March 2009, in which the Executive Director, Bank of India, Mr. M. Narendra, was the Chief Guest, an impressive 1172 beneficio-ries were provided financial assistance of Rs 1.28 Crore to purchase the Solar Home Lighting Systems. The press had givena wide coverage to the Credit Camp.
